Abstract | Fire is a major process in the Earth System. They can affect vegetation structure, change air composition, and disturb biogeochemical cycles both locally and at large scales. In Amazonia, fires are used as an inexpensive tool for land clearing and management. However, they may have important unintended consequences. Accidental fires are a major threat to forests. Frequent fires may reduce productivity and can lead to permanent conversion of forest areas into savannas. Emissions from fires in this region are a potential major source of greenhouse gases and aerosols to the atmosphere, which may have further implications to both regional weather and global climate conditions. Therefore, there is broad interest on building fire models than can be coupled to warning systems and vegetation models for this region. To this end, we built on results from previous studies and begun to improve known relations between fires and their explanatory factors by producing fire estimates at 0.05-deg and ~3-monthly, and in units of probability or chance of fires to occur. We used forest cover, rainfall and distance from main roads to represent the three main fire factors: fuel, flammability and ignition, respectively. Probability of fires as a function of these three main parameters was then evaluated using the fraction between the number of grid cells that had fires, and the total number of grid cells under same related conditions. The results from this study analyzed the importance of flammability and ignition, and reproduced the trends from other studies done at lower spatial and time resolution. In all cases, the probability of fires decreased with the amount of rainfall and the distance from main roads and ranged from 0 to 60%. In the south of Amazonia, however, fires were more likely to occur far (50-100km) from main roads than in the north or northeast of the region. These results have relevant implications for building fire models and estimating fire consequences in the region. In addition to be useful for estimating the likelihood of fires for the whole Amazonia at relatively high spatial resolution, the results from our method can be applied to fire behavior information and be used to estimate fire effects such as area burned and emissions. |
